Chapter 5
"The Cosmic Fly Swatter"
"What is Knowing?"... It seemed like the only question Daniel Hightower wanted answered; that and the meaning of the two words written inside a matchbook that was dropped on his cafe table. The words were Thanoma Mabo, and Daniel would spend the better part of two years discovering their meaning.
It took him on a journey around Pasadena, California. Pasadena, California, twenty plus miles as the crow flies from the Pacific Coast; a city like a lot of cities, a city unlike any other, holding a unique position in time/space unavailable to any other city.
It took him on a journey into metaphysics where he considered sense and non-sense and common sense, and insense, and his own two cents. It took him through science and religion and politics and culture. But this vacation from the ordinary day to day routines that most of us are saddled with performing, provided Daniel with a different perspective, one that left him in doldrums over not having those very day to day routines.
For Daniel Hightower took other unintended journeys. He wound up taking a dream journey on the ship, The Prequod. He travelled back in time through the ancient tales of Sir Cecil Throckmorton. He developed a holographic model of human perception he named the EAP Theory. He wound up in New Orleans to hear the Conference of All the Religions hosted by a former derelict and his namesake, the Reverand Bridger T. Hightower. But before he answered the mystery of Thanoma Mabo, he had thoroughly frightened himself in encounters with aliens and supernatural creatures. And all the while he was accompanied by phantasms like Dr. Fried Egg, and the appearances of other commonly known characters. This is what he got for asking the question, "What is Knowing."
This is what he got for letting all the books he had read spend time inside his own untutored imagination.
