EQUILIBRIUM

Equilibrium: a state in which opposing forces or influences are balanced.

Equilibrium is a principle that exists in physics and meta-physics alike. It is something we see in everyday life. When a ball bounces off a backboard, when somebody says "I'm sorry," we are seeing the pursuit of equilibrium.

Sir Isaac Newton's third law of motion can be reduced to "To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction." Equilibrium is the tendency of all things to retrieve a state of balance or rest. I am truly simplifying things here, but the older I get the more it appears to me that the truth of most things is simple and elegant and clear. It is for the sophisticates (the liars) that complexity has any real use, and it invariably involves Snake Oil of some kind.

It is easy to understand equlibrium when it is evidenced in the motion of physical bodies, but it is also a principle that has corollaries in non-physical events as well. It is quite simply a spiritual principle first and foremost. I can state it in a way that has meaning for myself and perhaps anybody else as:

All things must be paid for, one way or the other.

If you are a Bhuddist you dabble in the topic of equilibrium when you are discussing certain aspects of Karma. If you are a Jew or a Christian you have the concept of reap and sow, which describes its metaphysical observance. Muslims borrow from Jews and Christians. Most spiritual disciplines consider equilibrium one way or another. It is a fundamental.

All of justice is in pursuit of equilibrium. Ever see the lady justice wearing a blindfold and holding up a scale? Its all about balance, it's all about putting things back the way they were, and evening things out.

If you steal from or murder or injure somebody else, a price must be paid in the interest of equilibrium. Sometimes, however, no price can truly repay or put things back into a state of equilibrium. If I were to murder someone, the state might execute me, and it would be a life for a life applied in the pursuit of justice and equilibrium. But this would not attain true equilibrium. The murdered soul's loved ones have been robbed and cheated. No one can pay this back.

There is of course a cosmic equilibrium payment plan available. It is the ultimate equilibrium payment plan. It is Jesus Christ. He is unavailable only to those who reject Him. All applicants will be accepted in His plan. You cannot be denied no matter your age, or your transgression and, your premiums will never be increased. Call now! Operators are standing by...

Equilibrium is also what most humans would consider good health to be. If I get sick I want my state of rest or balance to return, I pursue my health which is my equilibrium, if I am so blessed.

No matter what subject you want to talk about, the idea of equilibrium is involved. It is the root of every good drama. Young guy or girl is mistreated and resolves to pay back, or get respect, etc. etc. etc. A team has a losing streak and struggles to regain it's former prowess...equilibrium sought after. A jilted lover resolves to pay back a treachery of some kind.

A simple business transaction involves equilibrium. If I give you something, a product or a service, in consideration you must give me something of agreed-upon equal value. Equilibrium is not reached until all payments are settled.

Equilibrium is a state in which opposing forces or influences are balanced. Equilibrium is justice itself.

Then there is politics. You would think equilibrium would work the same way in politics as in every other area of the world and the life inhabiting it. But somehow the laws of physics and metaphysics have been altered.

I'm not sure when this first occurred. There are political scientists who will swear that there has always been a sort of distortion in the equilibrium of politics. But they tell me that this is just a perceptive error, not an actual distortion. It must be like the red-shift in determining planetary distance or something. In any event they don't make much sense to me, and I'm pretty sure that political scientists cannot be relied upon for any certainty.

I told the last one I had a conversation with that he was clearly a victim of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. He didn't know what I was talking about, so I didn't tell him that I didn't know either.

But I do know the whole idea of equilibrium is different in politics. In fact there may be no such thing. There is only raw power and who weilds it at the moment. And all the justifications for any machinations that are clearly out of balance are covered and couched in linguistic buffoonry. "Economic Justice" is not justice per se but selective and predjudiced redistribution. Words are parsed so that they have no meaning. Is there really a difference between an economy that is sound and one that is strong?

And now it seems that those sectors of our society which impress the political machine with restraining and balancing influences are now merging with it instead. Beware the Washington/Wall Street Complex.

There will be no equilibrium in which opposing forces are balanced if those opposing forces become one force. And let's not kid ourselves, the single force that is growing out of the East Coast Circus will have no target but the individual American. It is war on initiative and free enterprise. The small businessman will be forced into conducting his business like a guerilla war, with a lot of cash, barter, and under the table transactions. Corner cutting and staying one step ahead of the parasites (lawyers) will be the order of the day.

Merging Washington and Wall Street is a movement that in itself will create a giant backlash. It is in itself a smash to the equilibrium of our charter as a nation. It can only lead to revolution and bloodshed if it is not stopped. We cannot take the ideals upon which we are founded and exchange them for Utopian nonsense. To do so is to course for violent waters beyond which lies an equilibrium of something unrecognizable as the United States of America.

Equilibrium is a state in which opposing forces or influences are balanced. The founding of this country assumed a structure in which the forces of government would be opposed by the the forces of private interest. The structure was built to accomodate the ebb and flow between the two. The equilibrium our founders concieved as the target cannot exist if the government grows so big that it squashes private perogative. If we do not stop the direction we are headed the Great Light will go out.
